About

Adoptable, Unstoppable, Marvelous Millie!

From a paralyzed, matted, cherry-eyed mess to a running, swimming, bouncy ball fanatic!

Millie is a beautiful petite black & tan girl about 2-3 years old. Her coat is wavy and lush and she has a white blaze on her chest. She joined the DFWCSR family in mid-March when she was picked up by animal control as a paralyzed stray dog, dragging herself through the streets all alone. Just two weeks later, after lots of meds and strict crate rest, she stood up on her own and hasn’t slowed down since! It’s unknown exactly what caused her paralysis as the medical images didn’t really offer many answers – thankfully her recovery has been remarkable!

Millie has 3 cats and 3 dog siblings in her foster home. She gets along fine with her dog siblings, and though she doesn’t really know how to “play”, she absolutely LOVES toys – especially balls, Nylabones, and stuffed squeaky things. She is not destructive, but she does like to see if she can get all the toys out of the basket faster than you can put them back in.

As with any severely injured rescue dog, Millie has conditions that will require some extra care, monitoring, rehab and training. Her mobility is great – if a little unstable. She has an odd gait, a slight hunch to her back, and her rear end often swings wide as the front end runs off without her. She can climb a couple of “pup steps” to get on the couch or bed with you, but she should never be allowed access to stairways or to jump on or off furniture without steps. She must be leashed on her harness rather than led by the collar to help protect her spine and prevent further nerve damage. She’s doing really well learning leash manners by taking walks through her neighborhood – which is also necessary for her continued recovery. She’s had several weeks of underwater treadmill therapy and has her own life jacket so she’s ready to go swimming with you.

Millie is a little reactive to strange dogs and humans and will need your help exploring the world and becoming better socialized so that everything isn’t so new and scary. She lacks the experience to play gently and calmly and can be vocally possessive with toys. She’s working on house training, so it may take some time before she is completely reliable (it’s possible that her accidents may be due to her paralysis). Her new family will have to be patient in regards to her potty needs and be prepared for a little clean-up – especially around meal times and when she gets excited or meets new people.

Sweet Millie sleeps in a crate at night so there are no accidents in the human bed, where she’d prefer to sleep. She takes her dental chew treat and runs straight into her crate, no fussing at all. She sleeps through the night and wakes up around 6:00 with a little whine to go out. She has settled into the schedule at her foster’s home well and will undoubtedly settle into your home like she’s always been there. Millie is an absolutely delightful little dog who just wants to live life like the princess she is.

Due to her mild reactivity, inexperience in the world and spine injury, Millie would do best in an adult home with no young children. She will need a special, experienced adopter who understands that she isn’t perfect and will need a little extra care and protection throughout her life.

Her cherry eyes have been repaired, she has been spayed, fully vaccinated and she’s on monthly heartworm prevention. Millie is now ready to consider applications for adoption.
