About
Due to the current situation with the COVID-19 (Corona) virus, in-person home visits are not possible at this time. Since this is a very important part of finding the best home for our dogs, we are not accepting any applications from first-time pet owners, applicants who have not had a pet in the past 3 years, or applicants who cannot furnish vet records. We hope you understand and that you will consider applying to adopt once restrictions have been lifted.
Ladies and gentleman, who would like to see the Magical Transformation of The Great O’Reilly?
O’Reilly has transformed from a terrified dog, growling at those who came near, into a cuddle bug who loves to be near his foster family. Read all about it!
O’Reilly was found as a stray, taken to a shelter and then taken in by DFWCSR. He’s been fully vetted and has a clean bill of health.
He is about 2 years old and is a designer dog – a cocker spaniel and basset mix, also known as a “hush bassett”. He gets along great with other dogs and currently has four foster brothers. O’Reilly loves to squeak plush toys and chase balls. He only chases them- he does not bring them back. Haha. At his foster home O’Reilly sleeps in bed with his foster family and sleeps fully covered under a blanket. If he is not covered, he uses his cold nose to gently remind them to cover him. O’Reilly walks well on a leash and is not reactive to other people or dogs passing by.
O’Reilly has transformed from a terrified pup into a wonderful addition to his foster family, but he needs help to make his transformation complete – a loving forever home.
His ideal forever home would be adults only. He will need slow introductions to his new family and new home- they will need to gain his trust. He needs experienced dog owners who are familiar with (or willing to learn) dog body language and use of positive reinforcement in training. A quiet household would be beneficial. Not that O’Reilly is quiet- he has a booming bark when he is excited and he is very playful. But he will likely always be scared of strangers and feel he needs to protect himself by growling and snarling. That’s his way of communicating that he is scared and his adopter should be willing to listen to that.
Once O’Reilly trusts you, he loves to be near you, loves being pet, loves going for walks and loves playing with toys. He is not possessive of food and takes treats very gently.
